History of the SV Malaita
1986-1991
Launched on 10 September, 1986 the Malaita’s maiden voyage was an ocean passage in December 1986 from the Solomon Islands to Cairns, Australia.
As an example of an historical replica, the Malaita was invited by the Australian Bi-Centennial Committee to participate in the Bi-Centennial Tall Ships celebrations. The vessel voyaged along the East coast of Australia in company with the fleet and carried trainees aged between 16-25 during this period.
1991-1993
The Malaita undertook daily tours of Magnetic Island reefs and beaches as well as four day sailing and camping tours to the National Park Islands and reefs along the ‘Island coast’ from Cairns to Townsville.
Chartered by the American National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) in their study of the Bismark Sea (the warmest part of the ocean on planet Earth), Malaita worked off the coast of Northern Papua New Guinea for more than three months.
1993-2000
With the growth of marine tourism in Cairns in the mid 1990’s, Malaita engaged in daily operations and private charters to the islands and reefs offshore of Cairns.
Malaita's open decks and easy sail plan have made her an ideal floating classroom for a number of schools. Educational programs introduced students to the basic aspects of weather, sailing, boat handling and to the marine environment of the Great Barrier Reef.
Personal Development and Corporate Charters were undertaken with the Youth and Crisis Children Action group (YACCA) and The Psychology Place (personal development group charters). Amongst many corporate charters were Circus Oz and the Russian Circus.
