Low Isle A protected Area
The Low isles and surrounding reef are:
- designated as part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area.
- part of the Great Barrier Marine Park
- zoned as a National Park Zone or green zone where no extraction is allowed
- Low Woody Isle is protected as one of the major Torres Strait pidgin nesting and breeding grounds within the GBR. As such it is closed to the public from October through to May.
Rules of the Reef & Island
DO NOT COLLECT | anything alive or dead. Please leave all shells, corals and plant life where you find them others to experience. |
DO NOT STAND | on the reef. All those things that look like rocks underwater are living corals, and are easily injured and broken. |
DO NOT FEED | any animals (birds, fish, turtles). Native animals cannot digest human foods. |
DO NOT LITTER | by dropping any paper, plastic or cigarette butts. Animals can suffer if they ingested these items. |
