Design History
The Sailing Vessel Malaita (pronounced Malay-ta) is based on a design derived from the famous Grand Banks Schooners that sailed out of Boston, USA and Nova Scotia, Canada in the early 1920’s.

Current Design and Building History
In 1984 Mr Jack Pompie (OA) of Pompie’s Boatyard, Mordialloc, Victoria was commissioned to assess the Malaita’s design for sea handling ability in conditions off coastal Australia and the Pacific Ocean.  The SV Malaita is built to Jacks re-designed specifications and licensed by the Queensland Marine Board to carry a deck complement of 25 passengers and a substantial amount of general cargo.

In 1985 the Fuiwale Boat building Company of The Solomon Islands were commissioned to build the S V Malaita.  The keel was laid in February 1985.  The vessel was launched on 10 September 1986. The Malaita is named in honour of the island of Malaita where the vessel was constructed and the boat builders of Malaita who constructed the vessel.  The Burns Philp trading ship “The Malaita” was the only other vessel registered to have carried this name.
