S.V. Malaita Port Douglas Reef Snorkel Tours
Eco and Great Barrier Reef certification

What are marine stingers?

During the warmer months of October to March - it is considered unsafe to swim off the beaches in North Queensland due to the presence of Box Jellyfish; unless you swim in a netted area or wear a lycra suit. Out on the Great Barrier Reef there may be Irukandji present. These are small jellyfish that can cause painful stings. Malaita Cruises encourage our guests to wear a full body lycra suit that protect you from the likelihood of an irukandji sting and also from sunburn when snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef.

Will I see whales, turtles or sharks?

As all these animals live in the wild we cannot guarantee their cooperation but the turtles have not let us down and
have appeared on every tour to date.. The Humpback and Dwarf Minkie whales are seasonal (June-September)
and you may be lucky enough to see a little white tip reef shark however, they are very shy so please don’t chase them.
